Spontaneous and Induced Ferroelectricity in the BiFe <sub> 1− <i>x</i> </sub> Sc <sub> <i>x</i> </sub> O <sub>3</sub> Perovskite Ceramics

High-pressure synthesis method allows obtaining single-phase perovskite BiFe1−x Sc x O3 ceramics in the entire concentration range. As-prepared compositions with from 0.30 to 0.55 have antipolar orthorhombic Pnma structure but can be irreversible converted into polar rhombohedral R3c or Ima2 phase via annealing at ambient pressure. Microstructure defects and large conductivity of high-pressure-synthesized make it difficult study even verify their ferroelectric properties. These obstacles overcome using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) addressing behavior inside single grains. Herein, PFM (0.30 ≤ 0.50) is reported. The annealed samples show a strong contrast. Switching domain polarity by an electric field confirms nature these samples. as-prepared BiFe0.5Sc0.5O3 demonstrate no accordance character phase. However, application enough induces transition state. BiFe0.7Sc0.3O3 coexistence antiferroelectric grains without poling. It assumed that mechanical stress caused sample polishing also driving transformation materials alongside temperature external field.
